Quilted Snow

Recently I was asked to make a card for the queen of Moxie- Fabulousness herself Cath Edvalson for the one year anniversary of her blog “Moxie Fab World.”  I got to work with one of my favorite sets from last release which was Holiday Tree designed by Heather Nichols.  I fell madly in love with these trees from the moment my eyes met this stamp set.  So between the wonderful occasion and the fantastic stamp set, I just had to think up something special.  Something tactile, something warm, something memorable.  Come along with me and see how I turned a little bit of paper and fleece into some quilted snow which will be simply the warmest snow you will ever have the pleasure of getting to touch!

Your project needs to start with a couple of tools.  You will need a real sewing machine for this project.  A Janome Sew Mini will not do the job.  You will also need some sharp cutting tools.  I personally use the fiskars scalloped and regular cutting wheels.  They are sharp and wonderful on fleece, fabric and paper.  You will need to start this project with the same sized piece of felt and paper.  I am using ivory felt and Papertrey Ink’s Rustic Cream Cardstock.

what you will do next is sew the pieces together, keeping one of  the short sides open to allow for fiberfill.  While sewing, I like to have my felt on the bottom and my paper on top.  This way you can clearly see where you are sewing and I feel it keeps the whole project more stable.

Now is the fun part!  Start filling your little snow pillow with fiberfill.   You do NOT want to overfill.  A nice thin layer works best as we will not be changing your presser foot to a quilting foot.  It also remains thin enough so the card doesn’t become bulky.  An unsharpened pencil is a nice way to guide the fiberfill gently down into the pillow.  Be carefull not to push too hard.  We want a gentle fluffy pillow, not a hard one.

Now it is time to sew up the open side and begin quilting.  I like to start in a far corner and kind of make gentle slopes.  There is no rule, and since this will be glued onto your project since it has a paper backing, if you mess up, it is easy to start again without losing a whole poject, but it is simple.  You shouldn’t have any trouble!

There is no need to change the presser foot.  You will be fine.  See what a nice little curve it makes!  You can see the soft snow starting to appear before your eyes!

See the wonderful drifts?

Adding a button and some glitter really go a long way in terms of sparkle and texture!

Simply place your panel on your card and make marks as to where you want your stamped images.  Then just glue the panel onto your card after you are done stamping, and you have a wonderful, warm snowdrift for your cards!  So many possibilities!  What would you do with this simple quilting technique in YOUR cards?  I would love to know!

i so love this card! the quilted felt/paper addition of snow adds such a nice texture and feel. my sewing machine is not in the room i do my crafts, so i have yet to use stitching on my cards… this may change all that! thanks for the inspiration and the tutorial.

Oh, I could use this to wipe the DROOL off my face..it is just gorgeous! I’m such a sissy thinking I can sew. I need a pep talk about how “uber-easy” this is to make. And I’m so insecure that I even need to know what kind of thread you used! See, I told ya Ü Yours has this pretty sheen to it. Thanks for inspiring, as always Ü
